Fashion Career:

Ava Carmichael began designing professionally in 2003 with her first collection of denim. In 2005, while attending Wade College of Design in Dallas, she launched her first evening wear collection in Austin, TX in the budding stages of ATX Fashion Week, and debuted her collection shortly thereafter at The Dallas Market.

In 2007, she went to  work for Russell-Newman designing lounge wear and sleepwear for private label companies such as Saks 5th Ave., Belk, JC Penney, Federated, TJ Maxx and Dillards.

Her interest and career moved her to Los Angeles in 2007, where she worked as a Costume Designer, Stylist and as a Denim Designer with premium brands such as Prospect Denim, Brown Label Jeans and Solow.

From 2009-2010, she lived in New York and Dallas, and successfully launched the denim collection, Mockingbird and the junior sportswear line, Berry Jane.

In 2011, she moved to Denver to design the men’s and women’s denim collections for Miller International, the 100-year-old western and equestrian lifestyle company with brands at over $80M in sales annually.

Her career strengths in the premium denim market as well as in equestrian riding and lifestyle, has helped her to merge the style, quality and functionality of fashion, which she utilized in her Carmichael and Co. Bicycle Bag Collection. The full collection was launched and funded with three successful campaigns on Kickstarter in 2013 and 2014, as well as the latest Spring ’15 collection, which received numerous press write-ups.

About Me, In My Own Words:

I’m a Costume Designer and Fashion Designer with a career emphasis in Denim. My passion is creating – whether it’s with a dress, or weaving a moment, a mood or a story around a costume. Over the years I have successfully built brands and ideas from concept to consumer, including a few of my own.

I began designing professionally in 2003 with my first collection of denim. In 2005, I launched an evening wear collection at Dallas Market. It wasn’t long before my dresses were being sold nationwide through an eCommerce site I built myself as well as on eBay. In one year’s time, I had sold hundreds of wedding and bridesmaid dresses online and designed one of the worlds first wedding dresses made entirely of lambskin.

As an independent fashion designer, one of my greatest challenges (and eventually, biggest asset) was to build collections on a very tight budget. If there was no road, I created one myself.  I never let a challenge stop me in my tracks. I always asked myself, “How hard could it be?”

I have always loved clothes. There is something extra special about finding a fabric and seeing it imagined as a dress, or a drapey blouse. And then spending time with that fabric, laying a pattern on it, pinning, cutting, sewing, watching it take shape.  That’s special. The creative process is what I love most about designing. I believe we can do anything we want to do. We are capable of amazing things, we just have to know that first. The rest is just pie.

I live in New England and NYC. When I’m not working my ass off, I’m traveling my face off.  Join me in my journey on Instagram
